Sunday Set List #11 6/14/09

Our Worship service went well today, the worship team was really insync and the congregation was engaged. In contrast with last weeks slower, more reflective song selection; we were upbeat most of the way. I really like the Grant/Tomlin arrangement of O Worship the King because it has a contemporary feel to it yet does a great job of preserving the essence of this classic hymn.

I haven't been including the Scripture Reading in my song list, but decided to this week for two reasons.

First, it is our practice to have the worship leader read a passage of Scripture at some point during the service. I generally pick something from my morning devotional reading. You can download the plan I created and use; an Excel Spreadsheet that takes you through the Old Testament once, Psalms and Proverbs twice, and New Testament five times in one or two years. This plan balances the reading length for each day (Microsoft Word's word count feature to the rescue!). You just have to enter the years and start date to generate a custom plan.

Second, this morning I decided to involved the congregation. I read Psalm 136 in my devotionals this morning and decided to have the congregation to do the "His love endures forever" part. Quick instruction on how not to do the part and a quick rehearsal made for an involved scripture reading.

My takeaway from the sermon: The church body chose the men not the apostles. A reminder that in New Testament times believers were involved by choosing not by asking for volunteers. Jesus did the same the same thing.
