It is a blessing to be part of a church where God’s Word is proclaimed boldly (thanks pastor Mark!), the congregation sings out (thanks to the saints at MLCC!), and the music team works together so well (you guys rock!). Today was an encouraging Sunday.

It Is Not Death To Die is really growing on me and our congregation. A very singable song with great words that are not covered in any other songs we are doing. It is great to find songs that add something instead of just rearrange the same words!

Not Of Our Hands is another song that is working well in our congregation. This is the first time Brian has led it and he did a super job with it.

We had a very emotional service this morning for a variety of reasons. It was hard not to sense God at work in our midst. We had several powerful testimonies for Sanctity of Life Sunday, and Pastor Mark brought a challenging message.

Brian passionately led the team this morning and the congregational response was strong. Nothing new in the mix, but the familiarity made for great singing. It was the first time I had played bass since November, and I enjoyed the change of pace.

Sunday Set List #131 1/15/2012

We opened with Everlasting God this morning. Brad introduced the song last May and we have not done it since June. I went ahead and had him lead the song since he was playing guitar today. It’s a great song and a fresh one for us; the congregation responded well to it.

This was our third Sunday for Father Forgive Us. The team is pretty tight on this one and the congregation is getting there. I would imagine the lyrics to this song make it a hard one to sing for those who are not serious about their faith. As for me it’s a bold statement of faith and our driving arrangement reflects it. It is now one of my favorite songs.

The rest of the songs are well known by the congregation and the singing reflected it.

Pastor Mark had his regular hard hitting sermon this morning. He challenged us as to whether we are putting ourselves and others in the way to be blessed by Jesus. I know I can do better.

It was a great Sunday to worship the Lord together with my brothers and sisters.

I opened our singing time of worship with a flat picking pattern on my acoustic guitar for the first verse of Before the Throne. The congregation’s voice was strong and clear and set the tone for the entire set. It is such a blessing to have a singing congregation.

I have gotten great feedback on Blessings. I believe God is really using it to minister to many in our midst who are really struggling. I have found it quite challenging to lead on the guitar (it’s really a piano song). It requires a lot of practice and my total concentration to do a credible job, but it is worth the effort.

This was our second week with Father Forgive Us, and the congregation’s response showed marked improvement; I can tell this song is going to be a keeper. Bold, hard-hitting, biblical lyrics and engaging to play and sing. It’s a great reminder of what I’m supposed to be about; definitely my kind of song. (My complete notes on this new song are here.)

There is no better way to celebrate the start of a new year than by worshipping the Lord with my brothers and sisters.

Brad surprised and delighted us by jumping on the drums shortly after we began our rehearsal of the first song. He said Greg would do the soundboard! From that point on it was smooth sailing. After we made some adjustments on the repeats for our new song Father Forgive Us (my notes on this new song here), we were good to go. I was great to have the drums to add some drive and emphasis to the song.

We had lower than normal attendance this morning, but those that came, came to worship. We had a Spirit filled time of worship in song and a Word based sermon challenging us to an active, expectant hope-filled faith like Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25-38).

4th Sunday in Advent

It is always exciting to do baptisms, and we had three this morning. We had to move the worship team because most of the team stands on the lid to the baptismal! We simplified things somewhat and reduced the instruments to an acoustic guitar and electric bass except for Celtic Christmas Blessing where we went with an acoustic guitar (Nashville tuning), mandolin, and electric bass. We were down on the floor and two feet from the start of the congregation, so we could really hear everyone singing this morning. It was clear, everyone loves the Christmas carols; what a blessing!!!

I was worried that for the call of worship Brian would use the same passage I read this morning in my Bible reading plan for devotions this morning. I breathed a sigh of relief when he chose a passage from Revelation. The passage also turned out to be the same passage I led for our Sunday School class this morning since we have been working through 2 Peter. When I sat down after the first set and opened my Bible to the passage for the sermon, I discovered it was the one I had already read to the congregation. It was one of those mornings were we were all on the same page.

It was a great morning to worship the Lord together!

New Song #1 for 2012: Father Forgive Us

I recently drafted my new songs plan for 2012, so it's time to get started.

The first song for 2012: Father Forgive Us

Here is the story on the find:

Idecided to start with the tough finds first: Closer- Evangelism/Missions songs. I don't have a single one on my new songs practicelist. Experience tells me if I passively wait and see if WorshipLeader Song Discovery includes a keeper, I may be waiting a long time.

ResoundWorship has been sending emails lately, and I haven't checked out their websitefor quite awhile, so I decided to start there.

Several of my favorite songs, What Kindof Throne? and Who is This?, I found at ResoundWorship. It is a great site because I canfreely and easily check out and test all their songs without having to buy anything. Since all their songs are on CCLI,their remuneration happens when their songs are used in worship and reported bylicensed churches like ours. It’s simple and easy. They truly get it; I wish other organizationswould follow their lead.

I had not been their website forawhile, but found their redesigned website made it easy for me. Since they havean option to view the songs in an ordered list from newest to oldest, it was easy for me to checkout the new songs since my last visit. I click on each title to bring up thepage for the song which shows the lyrics and gives me the option to startplaying the song as well as download a .mp3 and a chord chart. I like being able to quickly read the lyrics of each new song first to help me decide whether or not to listen to the song.

I worked my way down the list until I found Father Forgive Us. It had lyrics with a strongEvangelism/Missions theme, so I begin playing the song. The musical intro is notmy style, but I ignored it because I wanted to hear how the melody works with theengaging words that got my attention to begin with. I liked what I heard. I decided the songhas potential, so I downloaded the .mp3 and a chord chart and transferred them to myiPad (since I had forgotten the password, I had to get a new one first - It hadbeen awhile!).

The chart had the song in two keys. I chose the capo 3 chart forguitar players and begin playing and finally singing along with the song. Iliked it, so I tried it alone. It didn't sound so good with me singing alone. Thesong was too high for me to sing comfortably. I tried capo 2, better; then capo 1, better still; no capo,that's more like it! I went back and practiced it some more with the .mp3 totighten up some fuzzy spots with the melody. Now I am workingon how I will play the song.

I'm well on my way and looking forward to leading this outstanding new song!

3rd Sunday in Advent

Worshipping together is the way to start the week.

We opening the singing part of worship with O Come, All Ye Faithful and did the last chorus acapella. As always, the congregation really found it’s voice.

As it has turned out, the timing on introducing Blessings could not have been better, This was our third Sunday singing it, and it turned out to be a good fit after the sermon. I forgot to turn on my headset mic, so I had to stop the song after “We pray” and quickly restart the song. Since I was the only one playing there was really no way to resolve the problem I created for myself.

One of our favorite songs for the season is Celtic Christmas Blessing. Everyone looks forward to it. To get a little different sound I capo my guitar on the 7th fret, we add a mandolin, and lose the drums. I was using the Stumble Upon app on my iPad recently and stumbled upon a website describing Nashville Tuning. I had never heard of it, it looked interesting, so I watched a few You Tube Videos, and decided it might be an even better fit for the song. I strung up my Larrivee acoustic on Wednesday to test out the tuning and was amazed by the sound; tried it with the team on Thursday and everyone thought the guitar sounded great; so we did it today and it went very well. I will use it again next week.

How to Choose New Worship Songs for 2011 - Part 2

The filtering process for new songs is more efficient when you have already decided what you are looking for.

In Part 1 I showed my plan for 2011 and outlined a deliberate 4-step approach. Now I'm going to walk through those steps that resuited in the plan you see pictured for 2012.

1. Determine how many new songs is a realistic number.

I added eight new songs in 2011, an ambitious number for me. I think six is a good target for the new year since I want to continue to keep the songs from last year in the mix.

2. Determine what types of songs need attention.

I reviewed my play record by song category for the year to help me see what songs I used.

We need a new GITS - Father song. I discovered that with the exception of The Father's Love this year, I have not been adding any new songs in the GITS - Father category for several years. So that is a high priority this year. I would also like God referred to as Father in the song too.
We need a new Closer - Evangelism/Missions song. We only sang four different songs in our Closer - Evangelism/Missions category this year in contrast to ten different songs in each of the two other Closer categories. A new song or even two is also a high priority this year.
We need some "hard times" songs. I know many worshippers show up on Sunday morning struggling with the challenges of life in this world. I think it is important to have songs that recognize life can be hard, but that God can be trusted and praised in the midst of it. I call them "hard times" songs. I don't categorize them separately, but my goal is to have these kinds of songs to draw from in our song categories.

3. Organize your potential new song list according to your song categories of interest.

My potential new songs list is current but, with the exception of "hard times" songs, I don't have any GITS - Father or Closer - Evangelism/Missons ones in the list. I have my work cut out for me.

4. Work the plan.

To meet my goal this year will require more active searching on my part. Song Discovery CDs are not going to provide many options in these hard to fill categories. Though our most recent addition over a year ago to the category, By Faith (Getty and Townend), was from a Song Discovery CDs.

Sunday Set List #126 12/4/2011

2nd Sunday in Advent
This morning during the sermon Pastor Mark asked me when I planned the music. My answer was “three weeks ago.” He then pointed out to the congregation that he chose the sermon passage on Monday. The song we had just finished was He Shall Reign which was based on the exact same passage as the sermon, Isaiah 11:1-5. He didn’t realized at the time, the connections were just beginning. After the sermon You Are My King (Amazing Love) and Behold the Lamb (Communion Hymn) further reinforced his emphasis on Jesus, the promised King. We see God orchestrate connections between the sermon and music on a regular basis and it was especially encouraging this morning.
Though our rehearsal this morning went without a hitch, we had a few near train wrecks. I began the intro He Shall Reign with the wrong strumming pattern which pretty much smoked the band, somehow I managed to transition to the correct pattern and tempo right as we began to sing, the band locked on, and we were good to go! For a moment there it looked like we were flying into the ground with me leading the way.
On the last song As we hung on the A2 to begin the last song, Let the Joy Overflow, the drummer had something completely different in mind for both the pattern and tempo. I decided to press on and trust that Liam (our 12 year-old drummer) would sort out the problem, and sure enjoy he made the necessary correction and the song went well.
This was our second week with Blessings, and I have got nothing but excellent feedback on the song. I was hoping the song would be one that really ministered to those in the congregation that are facing challenges in their lives; I’m so glad we are doing it. It’s a tough song to lead from the guitar, but it’s worth it.

How to Choose New Worship Songs for 2012 - Part 1

Is your playlist getting better every year?
Are you just adding the latest and "hottest" new songs?
Maybe it's time to try a more structured approach.

This year I set specific goals for new songs. You can see the enhanced scan of my filled in worksheet on the right.
I write in pencil and recycle paper, so this is the best I could do.
In the past I have been sporadic in introducing new songs. There are always more new songs I want to introduce than we can sing. Some of our song categories need some fresh songs. We have worn out our favorites or we never had enough songs in some categories that we really want to play. I'm committed to balancing the content of our songs.

I decided I needed a more deliberate approach. As I outline the process I used, you may find some of these ideas are helpful.

1
Determine how many new songs is a realistic number.

Since we needed some fresh songs, I decided to go for 8. We have a 3 week rotational leadership schedule, and I lead every other time. As a result, I have 8 rotational opportunities to introduce a new songs. Since we play new songs three weeks in a row and only introduce 1 new song at a time, 8 songs becomes the maximum. For 2012 I probably won't try to do as many, so I can continue to reinforce all the new songs I introduced this year.

Determine what types of songs need attention.

I intentionally forced myself to introduce songs in hard to fill categories because they were in the most need of attention. I categorize songs to balance coverage. Some of those categories are easier to fill than others. If you look at my filled in worksheet, you can see I exceeded my minimum targets. Yet some one of those hard to fill categories (Closer-Evangelism/Missions) still got no new songs, so I will alter the worksheet to address that in 2012.

Though not visible on the sheet, 7 of the 8 new songs are congregational. I also categorize songs as to whether they are personal or congregational. I have been trying to balance this by introducing more congregational songs. For 2012 I will be going for a balance since we now have a good selection of congregational songs.

Organize your potential new song list according to your song categories of interest.

I started the year with a potential new songs binder with tabs for each song category. I put all the new songs I was considering in the binder accordingly. I also took a goals sheet and used it as a table of contents listing song the titles by category, so I could see what I had to work with. New songs that have merit that I want to test go into the binder. In June I transitioned that new songs binder to my iPad and I have a separate index that lists all my potential new songs by category.

Work the plan.

As I practice I typically focus on songs in a category or two. Over time some songs get more play time than others. Some songs are removed, other songs get added. I have a mental idea at any given time what the next new songs will be and in what order I will introduce them.

As I listen to new songs, I determine their categories and focus first. To get songs in those categories I often have to filter out excellent songs (musically) I don't need and end up trying good songs (musically) I do need. I hope those lyrically strong songs in the needed categories will grow on me as I sing them. A better approach would be to review more songs, so I can find excellent ones in the categories I need. But I have limited time and resources too!

My approach at first consideration might appear too constraining. Sometimes constraints are needed. For example: when it comes to eating, healthy diets are not an accident. They aren't driven on taste alone. It takes discipline to make the choices and establish the habits necessary that will lead to long term health. I also believe the same principle applies to the songs we sing.

Sunday Set List #125 11/27/2011

1st Sunday in Advent
We began O Come, O Come Emmanuel with just an acoustic guitar this morning and the congregation sang out boldly. By the time we added the drums and bass in verse 3, I knew it was going to be a great service.
All Things New was a new song last year at this time, we know it well now, and it’s a great upbeat song for advent.
I finally transposed Revelation Song from D to G, put the capo on the 4th fret to drop the song down a half step; now it’s much easier to sing. I should have done it a long time ago.
Pastor Mark walked up to the platform with tears in his eyes; it was that kind of set. It’s hard not to be encouraged when the pastor is moved! It would have been difficult not to sense the presence of the Lord.
Our new song for this morning is Blessings, and we will be singing it the next two Sundays. It’s a piano driven song and proved to be a challenge to capture the essence of it on the guitar. I have been working on it longer than I want to admit and was pleased at the response to it this morning. I think the song will be a good fit for our congregation. The lyrics are so rich and encouraging for those who are struggling.
We closed with Let the Joy Overflow which is an old hymn that I don’t know the tune. I really like the words and put the song to a simple new tune. For the first two weeks of advent I want to end the service focused on joy

To Be Like Christ: 2 Healthy Worship Team and 2 Healthy Song Selection Disciplines

In our zeal for passionate worship of God it’s easy to getcaught up in finding and using the next great song. In doing so we can fail toestablish sound worship team and song selection disciplines that can help theteam and congregation to become more like Christ.

As I completed my homework on Your Church Experiencing GodTogether by Henry and Melvin Blackaby, I was convicted. And then again in thestudy with the rest of the group, I was convicted again. Why? The main pointthat stood out to me is that the primary ministry responsibility as the leaderof the music team is to assist each member under my care to be like Christ. Itimplies that even when the music on Sunday morning is outstanding andcongregation participation is overwhelming, if the team members aren’t becominglike Christ, I am failing in my primary ministry responsibility. That is asobering thought. So how can I make my primary focus the spiritual growth anddevelopment of every member on the team? Following are two practical ways:

Healthy Worship Team Discipline #1
Have a short Bible Study and Prayer Time before everypractice.

Our time typically lasts about 30 minutes. The time is leadby the worship leader or a team member. A handout is provided to every teammember that has the passage text and discussion questions or a devotional(Oswald Chambers for example) with discussion questions. For a season weskipped this devotional time, and our practice sessions were often marked bymore conflict and interpersonal tension. We learned our lesson. Bible study andprayer sets the tone for a great practice as we learn, work, and grow together.

Healthy Worship Team Discipline #2
Have a short Bible Study on Sunday along with the practice.

We have about 30 minutes after practice on Sunday morningduring the Sunday school hour. We could easily just hang out and chat, or wecould do something more constructive. I have chosen to lead a Bible study forthe team, and anyone else who wants to join us. I open the session with anicebreaker question to get everyone talking and at ease. I provide a handoutwith the passage and the discussion questions I have planned. I often addadditional questions on the fly as the discussion progresses.
The value in these times is that we build relationshipsamong the members of the team as we discuss the Word of God, spiritual matters,and applying our faith to our lives.

As our team ministers to the congregation by leading thesinging part of our worship service, clearly our primary goal is to worshipGod. Yet at the same time we should also be aiming to encourage and stimulateeveryone to be like Christ. Whether intended or not, the songs we sing teach.The real question is what do the songs we sing teach those who sing them?

Our songs teach who God is.

Is the God revealed in our songs consistent with the onerevealed in the Word of God?
How comprehensive or selective is that picture of God?

Our songs teach what the proper response to God is.

Are the responses to God in our songs consistent with theones revealed in the Word of God?
How comprehensive or selective are those responses to God’scall on our lives?

My pastor and I recently finished The Narcissism Epidemic byJean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell. My takeaway is that the narcissismepidemic is affecting the Church and individual believers. I would suggest thatour worship of God in singing can easily become narcissistic (more about usindividually and less about God) if we aren’t careful. I think some songs haveelements that are unintentionally narcissistic.

For a thought provokingdiscussion of and help in recognizing narcissistic elements in worship songs, Irecommend reading Worship Lyrics and the Hidden Narcissism byManuel Luz.) I try to be discerning in the songs we sing, and yet, my eyes wereopened to what I had been missing.

An individual song with an unintentionalnarcissistic element is one thing; however; if many or all of the songs sung ona given Sunday are like it there may be a problem. For example: I love dessert,and if my meals regularly consisted entirely of different desserts, I think youwould agree that would be an unhealthy practice. I believe songs have differentpurposes and, if we aren’t careful, we can unknowingly create the dessertscenario I just described. It’s one thing to recognize the problem and anotherto come up with practices to prevent or avoid the problem.

Healthy Song Selection Discipline #1
Categorize every song based on content,
and balance the useof songs in each category.

I categorize all the songs we sing and use a categorizedsong planning template. This helps me make sure we are not leaving out themesthat should be covered regularly. When I identify ones that have unintentionalnarcissistic elements, I will begin using other songs with a similar purposethat I think will be a better choice.

Healthy Song Selection Discipline #2
Balance the use of congregational and individual songs
(We-IRatio of 0)

I pay attention to the overall We-I Ratio for a song set andtry to keep it close to zero on most Sundays. It sounds very mechanical becauseit is. Because personal songs (I, me) are very popular, they can dominate ourworship sets. It was true for me before I started paying attention (keepingscore)! The solution also entailed having congregational songs (we, us) we wantto sing. That meant finding and learning new songs. Now that we have plenty ofthem, it’s not hard to do at all.

I try to be strategic in choosing songs. Instead of focusingon one Sunday at a time; I try to build sets with their effect on the long termin mind. For the health of the congregation I use these two disciplines to avoidall dessert Sundays.

Today was a delight to be in the house of the Lord. The highlight song this morning for me was It Is Not Death To Die. I was really pleased Brian chose to lead it. I have found it a challenge to lead from the guitar, but for some reason it is easy to sing and play on the bass. I can tell the song has really grown on the congregation. The song is a great reminder of the promise of eternal life to those who trust in Jesus Christ. It proved timely as Pastor Mark preached a sobering sermon on the Day of the Lord this morning.

Congregational Singing Lessons Revisited Part 2

There are at least sixpractices that can discourage congregational singing. Some of these may beaffecting the singing in your church service. Some simple changes can make abig difference.

In Part 1 I summarized andprovided a self evaluation on the first two of the four dysfunctions ofcongregational singing outlined by Stan Endicott in Worship Leader's November2011 eNewsletter article CongregationalSinging Lessons. Here are the last two dysfunctions followed by two of myown:

Bad key choices.

Stan’s guidance is clear;multigenerational worship requires lower keys than male worship leaderstypically choose.

Self Evaluation Grade: A. Choosing a key the wholecongregation can sing in should be a no brainer, but apparently it is not! Inever realized men sing higher than women, but I do now. I can’t rememberleading a song in a higher key than the recording I learned thesong from. Most of the time I am taking songs down, and sometimes that includesaltering the melody to deal with range problems (the capo is my best friend!).I asked two of our female vocalist if we are keying the songs we sing too high;they answered “no.” It turns out thathaving an average vocal range is a blessing. When I settle on a key for a song,it works well for most people in our congregation too!

Music that is too “busy.”

Stan’s recommendations are to thin out the arrangement,avoid sameness, let the congregation hear themselves, and inspire them by themusic.

Self Evaluation Grade: B. Some of our songs have moreambitious arrangements than others and we try to keep things interesting. Thekey idea to remember is to “let the congregation hear themselves.” I agree thatwith large worship bands thinning out arrangements is essential and avoidingsameness has value too, but that is not the reason the congregation can’t hearthemselves. If the band volume is too loud, it is too loud. It can be too loudregardless of the number of instruments. When the band is too loud, singing isdiscouraged. When the band is not loud enough, singing is discouraged. When theteam vocals can’t be heard clearly, singing is discouraged (especially on newsongs). There is a sweet spot for boththe volume and the mix, and if the sound crew doesn’t find it, singing will bediscouraged.

Stan says “the congregation needs to be inspired by themusic,” and that seems to be the conventional wisdom among worship leaders. Mypersonal experiences have taught me otherwise. Let me share two examples.

Bouzouki Story. Ibuilt and used a 4-string bouzouki in worship. The feedback I received from theworship musicians on playing the instrument was less than encouraging: not afull enough sound, sounds tinny, sounds different, … I asked someone I knew inthe congregation about the singing on that Sunday fishing for feedback on mybouzouki. She thought everything was fine and wasn’t even aware I had beenplaying a different instrument!

Drums Story. Wewere doing the music for a men’s retreat for another church. We had a fourpiece band: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and electric drums. Thepedal on the bass drum failed shortly into the first set and the drummer playedon using what was working. During the second set, the cable fell out theelectronic brain quieting the drums completely. When the drummer realized whathad happened he plugged it back in and jumped in at an appropriate point. Fromour perspective it was a disaster. I found it interesting that when we weretalking about our difficulties that few of the guys were even aware there was aproblem; they thought the worship music was great!

I believe thecongregation needs to be inspired by the message of the songs we sing to Godand to each other. There is a certain level of ability and excellenceessential to encourage and support congregational singing. It’s easy to losesight of that when we get too wrapped up in the music.

Here is one last story. I was talking with my son recently.He made the observation that in the churches he has attended (large churches,large band) the time of singing was more of a concert than a time to worshipthe Lord. Congregational worship in song is different than a concert because ofits purpose and focus. It looks different, feel different, and the results aredifferent!

Two More Dysfunctions

As I reflected on Stan’s insights two of our healthypractices of congregational singing came to mind and I simply reframed them asdysfunctions.

Not regularly giving thecongregation the opportunity to sing acapella.

Many congregations never truly get to hear themselves sing;the band pretty much drowns them out. I have been at large conferences whereall I could hear is the band; I could not hear my own voice or the voices ofthe people next to me. I have found whenyou silence the instruments, the voice of the congregation rises to theoccasion. We typically do it on the last verse or final chorus of a hymnbecause their melodies seem to work well without instruments. We have usedchoruses, but they have to be selected more carefully because many are moredependent on the supporting rhythm instruments to fill vocal gaps or theirmelodies aren’t as engaging alone. Wedon’t do this every Sunday, but it is a regular practice and a very upliftingand encouraging one for everyone!

Not repeating songs enough to reallylearn them.

People sing tentatively or don’t sing new songs and songsthey don’t know very well. Planned repetition of songs is essential to buildingfamiliarity and confidence. The challenge is to introduce enough new songs tokeep things fresh, and yet have enough well know songs each week to keep everyonefully engaged. There are practical limits to how many new songs a congregationcan absorb before singing begins to suffer. I have to know my congregation andmy music team. I have to deliberately planrepetition of songs, even when I might want to sing other songs, because it isin the best interest of the congregation. I know our music team will tireof a song before the congregation because we play it many more times. Ipractice most songs at least eight times for every time we play it in a worshipservice. I have found that some songs grow on me as I sing them more and more;some don’t and I stop using them.

Are you giving your congregation a regular chance to hearand find its voice?

Sunday Set List #123 11/13/2011

It was another great morning gathered together. Brian planned an upbeat set and provided high energy leadership from the guitar, the band played and sang well, and the congregation sang out. I enjoyed hanging out on the bass for a relaxing Sunday. I can’t even pick out a highlight song for me this morning; they were all great. I was nice to dust off Blessed Be Your Name; we went with a choppy, driving arrangement.

Pastor Mark had another hard hitting sermon. The question for the day: Are you prepared to meet Jesus today? I think it’s an excellent question every day.

Congregational Singing Lessons Revisited Part 1

There are at least sixpractices that can discourage congregational singing. Some of these may beaffecting the singing in your church service. Some simple changes can make abig difference.

The other night as I reviewed Worship Leader's November 2011eNewsletter, the article Congregational Singing Lessons by Stan Endicott caught my attention. He stated, “If your church doesn’t sing it’s probablybecause of one of two things: either they haven’t been invited to sing or theobstacles to their singing have not been removed.” I realized I am blessedto be in a congregation that sings, but that has not always been the case atMLCC. Stan identified four dysfunctions of congregational singing and made somesuggestions. I will summarize each and add my self evaluation then I will addtwo more.

Not realizing the congregation ispresent

Stan’s suggested actions are providing clear direction onwho is singing and when to stand (a maximum of 12 minutes) plus corporatereading of scripture.

Self Evaluation Grade: A. I have a simple straightforwardapproach: the team leads thecongregation vocally by example. When only the women vocalists are singing,it’s a part the women sing. When only the male vocalists sing it’s a part onlythe men sing. By doing it this way, no verbal instruction is needed. I knowother leaders like to create more vocally interesting arrangements which arecertainly more engaging and fun for the team, but I’m not convinced thatapproach is more effective for congregation singing. I visited a church where Iwas unsure, by how the vocals were handled, whether I was supposed to sing orlisten. It was unsettling, caused me to sing tentatively, and made me feel like an outsider.

Our worship leadersprovide direction on standing and sitting. Since our sets are usually threesongs (about 12 minutes) and we don’t normally stand for all of them, standingtime is not really an issue for us.

The worship leader ora team member reads a scripture passage every Sunday. Having thecongregation do it together is a possibility, and I tried it for a season. Ifound the congregation doesn’t read aloud well. When I stopped the practice, no one saida word, one way or the other.

Vanilla song choices

Stan’s point is that finding great songs that arecongregational in their appeal requires time, review a lot of songs, andgetting help from others to overcome personal tastes.

Self Evaluation Grade: B. I know need to work harder finding songs. We have some great songs,but I know we can do better. Great songs are hard to find, for all the reasonsStan mentioned and more. His photo analogy of taking 14,000 pictures to get 30for a National Geographic article makes a good point: one needs to take a lotof pictures to have a few great ones. He recommended not settling for thenormal path of finding good songs. I take this “normal path” to mean using thelatest CD by your favorite artist(s) or even the latest the Song Discovery CD;he doesn’t say. He does note “the process of finding great songs is extremelyimportant.” I’m always looking for new approaches, but I was disappointed thatno process details were included and also no evaluation details of how torecognize those great songs.

I know I need to spend more time looking for songs, but Ihate wasting time in the process. My biggest obstacle: I prefer to read the lyrics before deciding to listen to a recording.One reason is that I don’t want the music to drive the selection process. It’seasy to compromise on content when a song is fun to play and sing. Anotherreason is that when I listen to recordings, often the lyrics are not clearenough to understand the meaning of the song even after listening several times! As a result, Ididn’t bother to consider the free MP3s offered in the same newsletter becauseI knew from past experience, the lyrics would not be as easily available. (Justto verify that things had not changed, I went back and clicked the link for thefree MP3s; sure enough after entering personal info and security text, nolyrics were available to download at the same time. I bailed out!)

Sunday Set List #122 11/6/2011

It was a good morning. Teresa was able to fill in with no notice for Dawn who was really sick. The team played and sang well together. I shortened I Cannot Ignore on the fly based on how fast the bread was being passed out during Communion. I stepped back, turned my head to the left and said let’s go to the end. Since I change road maps rarely, I knew there was a possibility of playing through a train wreck, but the team followed without a hitch. I originally planned this set for last week, but a short notice trip took me out of town. I decided the set was fine, so I added in Once Again to fill in the extra song we needed for Communion Sunday. We haven’t done it for awhile, but it came to mind as a result of a research project I am working on with my pastor.

What has happened to the Father in our worship songs?

The pastor’s wife, one of our vocalists on the worship team,commented recently that she really liked the new song The Father’s Love. Like many of us, she grew up without a godlyfather, and this song really ministers to her heart. I can understand that; itministers to my heart too, and reminds me of the amazing father God is. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray,Jesus began “Our Father who art in heaven …” We call it the Lord’s Prayer orthe Disciple’s Prayer. Many of our songs are sung prayers. Jesus referred toGod most often using the word Father and directed us to pray to the Father in hisname. Christian worship is often summarized as praising the Father, in the nameof the Son, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

From Theory to Practice. Not too long ago I went through all our worship songs justto see how many address God as Father. The results were not very encouraging, especiallywhen it came to the songs we sing regularly. Not many of our GITS-Father (Godin the Spotlight – Father) songs actually addressed God as Father. I knew Icould do better and needed to do better. TheFather’s Love is a step in that direction for us.

Strategically, as I add new songs tothat playlist category; addressing God as Father will be foremost in my mind.

Is it consistent with the one Jesus painted with his words?

Sunday Set List #121 10/21/2011

We had a great Sunday gathered together worshipping the Lord. The team played and sang well together, the congregational response was tremendous. We went acapella for the last verse of Holy, Holy, Holy and it was a beautiful worship moment as everyone sang together in unison.

Pastor Mark showed us from the Word that every believer is a minister. It’s too bad that so many miss out of the joy and blessing of ministering. I can’t imagine life without it.

I really enjoy using my iPad for leading worship, but when I came up to do the first set and tapped the foot pedal and the page did not advance (I have learned to do a quick test before starting any set!), I quickly shut down and restarted the iPad. Fortunately by the time Brian had completed the call to worship, everything was up and running correctly and ran without a hitch. I will admit, I was concerned about a repeat performance for the second set; it did not happen though.

Our opener, Sing the Wondrous Love of Jesus, set the tone this morning. I could hear the congregation singing loudly before we got to the planned acapella final chorus, so my sense of expectation was high. I was not disappointed; it is so encouraging to hear God’s people sing to him! Behold the Lamb of God was a new song for us this morning, and I’m sure it will catch on as we sing it for the next two weeks. It was great to be back leading; the team played and sang great which made everything seem effortless. What a blessing it is to be a part of it.

Pastor Mark pointed out this morning that out of over 100 references to the church, 95% of them refer to the local church. It’s a reminder to me of how important the local assembly is in God’s plans.

As Paul Mayhugh, one of our missionaries was speaking this morning, I was reminded what a privilege it is to freely worship together. I can’t imagine regularly meeting together with believers and not being able to sing to the Lord! We are blessed.

Dennis did a great job leading this morning, yet we struggled as a team to find our rhythm. Starting songs was a problem. Normally playing the bass lets me kick back and relax. But, … I discovered my foot pedal wasn’t working when I tried to change to Indescribable. I had already been fighting with it all week and ran it several times at home before leaving for church this morning. I just couldn’t seem to lock into the song and the two page turns my hand did not help. Just thinking about having to do them psyched me out! Fortunately, There Is A Redeemer was all on one page, so I settled down as we finished the set. I shut down my iPad and restarted it as we left the platform and when I came back up everything worked fine for the second set.

Our simple arrangement of I Serve A Risen Savior really encourages the congregation to sing and this morning was no exception as we ended on a high note.

It was a great day to be gathered together worshipping the Lord! Dennis was leading and did an outstanding job. We had a couple of shaky starts on a few songs, but the team pulled together and made it work. I could hear the congregation clearly this morning and was really encouraged. I really like the way Dennis sings We Worship A Wonderful Savior. He does a couple of the vocal lines a little differently, and, once I adjusted, I found I really like the changes. I was reminded that we lead a song best when we make it ours.
Pastor Mark had a hard hitting sermon this morning. One of my takeaways is the statement “When you fear God, you fear nothing else. When you do not fear God, you fear everything else.” He followed it up a little later with the question “Why do we play with sin like we do?” I was convicted.

The worship service went well this morning. Dennis led and did an outstanding job. I enjoyed playing bass. We were both using our iPads and unrealBook to display our leadsheets. A taste of adventure over a love of comfort
If I would have been in a hurry, I would have missed it.

The music went well this morning. Having Brad join us on the drums was a treat. I spontaneously decided to go acapella on the last chorus of Living for Jesus. I looked over to Brad for half of the last verse to get his attention, but he was in the zone with his eyes closed, so our transition to acapella was a bit staggered. It worked out just fine; the congregation’s voice rose to fill the void of the instruments. It made for a fitting end to the singing this morning.

Sunday Set List #115 9/11/2011

The worship service went well this morning. It goes well on most Sunday mornings because we have a singing congregation and that changes everything. It was apparent from the first song, the second song, The Father’s Love, was a new one, so that quieted everyone, but only temporarily. I did create a few glitches this morning, in the first set I forgot to repeat the first verse on It Is Not Death to Die and went right into the chorus; I announced a quick “Let’s do that verse again” after the chorus, and the band and Earl at the slides didn’t miss a beat. In the second set on the first song, Spirit, I realized right away as I started singing I had not turned on my headset mic. I just kept singing to keep the band going, quickly turned it on with a pop, and jumped back into the pattern pick as quick as possible to minimize the interruption; fortunately, it worked quite well. It wasn’t one of our best Sundays from a technical perspective, but we worshipped the Lord with one voice nonetheless!

Below is the view from my iPad of today’s setlist; the app is unrealBook. The two Romans passages you see in the setilist came from my Bible reading this morning using the Glo Bible app.I pasted the verses into blank PDFs in unrealBook and then added them to the playlist at the point where I read them. Since I’m leading from the guitar, and you can see this first song is three pages, I use the USB Footime Page Turner to turn the pages. I have scaled the customized Courier New font I use larger than our normal printed leadsheets, so they are very easy to read. Only playing outside in bright sunshine would cause me to go to paper now! I got the iPad just to do this, and after using this setup now for over two months, it has proved to be money well spent.

Sunday Set List #114 8/21/2011

It was a great Sunday. Pastor Mark’s sermon was a real encouragement and a reminder that just because affliction has come it doesn’t mean God has forgotten you. It was timely!

We were having hardware problems with our sound system and this morning was a struggle. The amp for the monitors was not working and mic connections were flaking out. Brad sorted out the connection problems, but we ended up playing using the house mix only. Brian didn’t miss a beat while leading and the team played tight. I’m sure the congregation never knew we had any problems; they sang out like they do every Sunday; we are blessed!

Thursday night I found out I programmed the wrong closer for Brian’s set. He wanted “I Walk by Faith”, but wrote down “Walk by Faith” with the corresponding song number. His brother Brad has led the song, so I figured it was the one he wanted even though Brian had never lead it. He decided to go with it anyway; as it turned out we both agreed it was a great fit this morning. God knew which song we needed. For me it was the high point worshipping God.

The sermon this morning was an eye opener for most of us. My brother, Brian, and sister-in-law, Deanne, are in country and were with us this morning to bring the message and tell us what they have been up to and what God has been doing. The Muslim culture and people are hard to understand, but I made some significant progress today.

Worship in song went very well; no hitches whatsoever. The team was tight. Liam is doing a great job on the drums; he has a steady and consistent hand and that is a real plus. Congregational participation was outstanding on all the songs which is normal and a real encouragement to me and something I am thankful for.

Sunday Set List #112 7/31/2011

We packed up our gear for an outdoor service and picnic at the local park. The weather was perfect and we had one of the smoothest setups ever. We were done with setup and rehearsal 45 minutes before the service started which set the tone for the service.

Pastor Mark and his wife Teresa are taking a well deserved vacation to Hawaii, so Brad covered the sermon this morning. His sermon from Philippians 4:4-9 was a great reminder of the importance of filling our minds with good things, especially the Word of God.

Brian did a great job of leading this morning. His son Liam was on the drums; it was the second time he has played with the team and he did a terrific job this morning. I went ahead and shared a music stand with Brian. No iPad this morning; it would not have worked with the sun behind me. I was missing the larger font sizes I have gotten used to on my iPad. We had excellent participation in the singing. It was great to be outside and visible to our community boldly testifying to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and singing his praises for all to hear.

Today was a great day to gathered together with fellow believers. John and Lindsey Kargo, our missionaries from Africa were with us. John is an African native and delivered a hard hitting sermon this morning. He stated that “fake theology” is knowing scripture, but not doing what God wants you to do.

The accapella final chorus of To God by the Glory was a high point as we sang together. I love to hear the congregation, and I’m sure the Lord does too!

Sunday Set List #110 7/17/2011

Today was a great Sunday to be in the house of the Lord. During warm-up we struggled through some of the songs. I brought one song to a complete halt with a foot pedal page turn on my iPad that I couldn’t recover from (Fortunately, I recovered nicely from another bad one during the service!). Yet the congregational response as we worshipped the Lord in song this morning was stunning. As the Pastor came to the pulpit with tears in his eyes, I was reminded that Spirit inspired worship is an incredible multiplier of our efforts and something that can’t be forced. Our goal is to faithfully choose biblical songs, practice them, and present them humbly trusting that God will use them to accomplish his purposes.

Pastor Mark gave a sobering sermon on wealth noting that money is more than a means of exchange, and I agree wholeheartedly.

Sunday Set List #109 7/10/2011

My takeaway from the sermon this morning is that the worship of fools is focusing on what I like in worship instead of asking what pleases God in worship and doing that.

The music went smoothly this morning with our normal excellent congregational response. The team played an sang well; Brad is doing an outstanding job of improving our platform mix (a trouble spot for us).

I’m still mastering the foot pedal on my iPad, so I had to quickly back up on Speak, O Lord as I accidentally double-clicked and went from page 1 (verse 1) to page 3 (verse 3). I’m not sure anyone noticed. I also spent some extra practice time at home on Spirit to get consistent with the foot pedal page turning while I am pattern-picking the song, and the extra work paid off. It sure is nice not to be shuffling paper on my music stand and to have the larger text! More thoughts on using the iPad are here: iPad in Worship.

Pastor Mark’s series on Ecclesiastes has been outstanding. My takeaways this morning were the reminder that “we were not made for isolation,” and the thought provoking question “Who do I allow to speak into my life?”

We had a stripped down team this morning with just two acoustic guitars for instrumentation, but it had no effect on the singing. We had a full sanctuary and spirited singing. I decided on the fly to go accapella on the final chorus of Lead Me to Calvary and the congregational response was amazing. It was a great Sunday to worship the Lord together.

iPad in Worship

I recently purchased an iPad with the intention of replacing all my notebooks of worship music and paper shuffling on a music stand. After some research into the various apps and peripherals, I decided on unrealBook and the Footime Page Turner. I have four main goals in using the iPad:

All songs, one place, always available
No more shuffling papers on the music stand during worship services
Enhanced practice at home
Improved leadsheets (chordsheets actually)

I have used the iPad two Sundays now in worship. The first Sunday two weeks ago was when I played the bass and this past Sunday when I led worship with my guitar sharing my music stand with another guitar player. I am pleased to report that I am well on my way to accomplishing my goals.

All songs, one place, always available. This is the most ambitious of the goals. At this point I have reformatted into PDF files all the songs (almost 500) from my Access database, my separate bass arrangements (almost 30) for capo songs, and around 20 songs for our fourth Sunday Fellowship. This represents the main effort, but I still have other smaller collections of songs and instructional materials I want to input into the iPad.

No more shuffling papers on music the music stand during worship services. With the songs in the iPad it is now a simple matter of building a setlist for each Sunday. Since I normally read a printed passage from the Bible each Sunday, this morning I saved it as PDF, copied it to my iPad, and then added it to my setlist. It worked just fine.

Enhanced Practice at home. UnrealBook has a metronome that allows you to link settings to individual songs, and it also allows you to link audio files to songs. When I practice the bass I normally have to find and pull up songs individually on my laptop. Now as I link the songs to individual PDF leadsheets, practice and preparation for Sunday is a breeze. I have only used the metronome enough to master the functionality of the feature, but I plan to integrate it into my practice to work more on my timing.

Improved leadsheets. Because the iPad’s screen is smaller than a standard piece of paper, a normal leadsheet will be scaled down to fit on the screen. Since reducing font sizes is not an improvement, my leadsheets will all have to be reworked. Since I’m going to have to do the work, my preference is to have the font size slightly larger. I experimented briefly with a program that would allow me to use proportionally spaced fonts which look great, but I decided that the extra work and inconsistent results are not worth it. My current chordsheets use a more readable, modified version of the Courier New font that I did on the Mac back in the early nineties. After some testing of some potential replacement monospaced fonts I downloaded from the internet, I decided it was still my best choice. I used a few macros in Word to aid in the reformatting effort. I ended up using .1” margins and a 24 point font size which after the scaling yields text slightly larger than 14 points size on the normal printed sheets. I put an orange arrow at the bottom right of multiple page leadsheets, so I will know there is another page.

Since the Footime Page Turner plugs into the bottom of the iPad, I made a wooden holder so I can set the iPad on the music stand and allow for the cabling.

So far I am pleased with how everything is working, and I am getting better at using the footswitch! This beats paper any day. The iPad also works well in poor lighting which is not unusual in many living rooms. It won’t be long and I will have all my music easily available for use in any setting.

We had an excellent Lord’s Day. One things that really encourages me is a singing congregation; that is the norm for us. And yet today the level of engagement was well above the norm. You would have never known by his passionate leading today that Brad was struggling to get well. God always provides.

I got my iPad and Footime Page Turner setup to display my chord sheets using unrealBook and everything worked great from the bass. Next week I will try it for leading worship. I hope to post more details later this week.

Happy Father’s Day

We had a full congregation this morning; that always means worship in song is going to be encouraging, and it was. Brad wasn’t feeling so hot this morning, but you would never have guessed by how he led us this morning. It’s easy to lead when your feeling great; I really admire people you can count on for their best in every situation. Brad is one of those guys, and we are blessed.

You won’t recognize Hail the Resurrection Day; it’s a great text from another period that I put to music. There are plenty of collections of hymn texts out there with really good stuff waiting to be brought back to life with a creative touch.

We had a change of pace Sunday with our missionaries from Mexico Roger and Diana Ward. It was good to get an update of what God is doing south of the border.

Congregational singing was outstanding this morning. I really heard the voices clearly on How Great Thou Art. Brian joined us on the guitar-style dulcimer I made which gave us a real old time sound.

The service went well today. As it turned out It Is Not Death to Die connected to Pastor Mark’s sermon; a reminder to me that the Holy Spirit can orchestrate the song choice even when songs are chosen weeks in advance. We added the mando to The Old Rugged Cross to change things up. The only glitch we had was my fault; I forgot to turn on my headset mic for Spirit; I realized it in the middle of the first verse, but there was no way to fix it until the next song. I just sang louder. As Pastor Mark said this morning, “The joy is in the journey.”

Worship went well this morning. Unfailing Love was a new song for us this morning and it went well. I took some liberties with the Vineyard version and adjusted the road map through the song and changed the ending. Based on Pastor Mark’s sermon I decided to repeat Remain In My Love because it really accented some of his words in the sermon and skip the planned song for that slot. The congregation really responded well second time around.

“Who are you living for today?” is one of the questions our missionary Mike Klontz challenged us with this morning. We can sing that we are living for Jesus in our song, but what do our lives say? It was a good morning to hear God speak.

The high point in the service for me is when we brought Rob up to the front and prayed for him. He will be leaving tomorrow for a new job and training in California. It has been a blessing to work with Rob on the music team and watch him grow. He has served well, and we will miss him. It was a fitting way to mark his last service with us.

The music went well. This was our second Sunday with Everlasting God, and the congregation response tells me this song will be a keeper. Hero has been well received too. Here are all the songs we did:

We had a great Sunday worshipping the Lord. Everlasting God was a new song for us and it will be a keeper. Brad did a great job of leading it; everyone seemed to pick it up quickly. A great opener, it is strong lyrically, fun to play, and to sing. I enjoyed hanging out on the bass this morning.

Pastor Mark has a great sermon for Mother’s Day; it was a great reminder of the incredible influence my mom had on my life, one I benefit from to this day. I suspect a lot of moms don’t feel like they are accomplishing much at the time, but I have much to be thankful for.

Christ is risen!!! He is risen indeed!!!

We had a combined service at the local high school this morning.

The setup and sound check went surprisingly well. We have had some changes in our team composition, and our last setup was a struggle. Our only problem this morning was a hum on the electric drum set. Fortunately, we were able to isolate the problem to a bad xlr cable and swap it out. Everyone worked really well together this morning and the extra time Brad spent checking out some of the gear we had problems with last time really paid off.

I interspersed the Chorus of Graham Kendrick’s Christ is Risen with the verses of classic hymn Christ the Lord is Risen Today; they work together well in a fresh way.

I changed the plan on Thursday night and added in Mighty to Save as our closer and deleted the opening song from the second set. It was a song I hadn’t led before, but I chose to add it after singing it at a wedding the previous week. It proved to be a good choice and a bold ending for Resurrection Sunday. The team played and sang well and the congregation participation was excellent.

My thanks to Pastor Mark and the Music team for praying for me this morning; it’s been a tough week; I was thankful to be healthy enough to lead.

In reflecting on the service this morning, I am reminded of what a privilege is to worship together with the people of God where:

The Word of God is faithfully proclaimed. Pastor Mark had a sobering sermon on the sufferings of Christ where he pointed out that to remember the cross is to remember the journey to the cross.

The congregation lifts their voices together in song to God. I saw the eyes light up this morning as we sang How Great Thou Art with just the stringed instruments. Brad played the mandolin instead of the drums and I used a pattern pick on the guitar for new and graceful arrangement of the classic hymn. Our new song this morning was It is Not Death to Die, and it will be a rich addition to our playlist.

What makes for “good” worship service?

A sermon that reminds us of the gospel; what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.
Songs that remind us of the gospel; what God has done for us in Jesus Christ and give us a chance to respond with thanksgiving and gratitude.

That is what happened this morning. It’s tough to listen to a sermon about sacrifice and suffering, but that is what God did for us. It was a privilege to be part of the people’s song this morning. Brad put together an excellent set of God-centered songs and led them well. His 4th grade daughter Julia joined us on The Wonderful Cross (Great job Julia!!!). It is always encouraging to have young musicians playing with us. It was a great Sunday to be worshipping God with the saints.

Sunday Set List #94 3/13/2011

This morning we had a Maxim Katz from Chosen People Ministries speak to us. He flew in from Jerusalem, Israel yesterday. He shared what they are doing during Sunday School and the message during the worship service. My takeaway was the reminder of how important our example is for others.

The congregation was its normal engaged self, always encouraging. Brian broke a string on God of Wonders in the first set; I didn’t realize it at first, just thought he was focusing on singing; then I looked down at his guitar and saw the problem. Most people probably didn’t realize anything had happened; he didn’t draw any attention to it, and we had planned a musical transition to the last song in the set (not our usual way) and it went off without a hitch. My wife asked when I sat down why Brian stopped playing, so that is all she noticed. Brian went home and brought back another electric guitar for the second set (one of the benefits of small town living and being close to the church) which went smoothly.

The vocals were especially tight this morning; Susan and Ted did a great job with some timely harmonies. Brian also add some nice ones in and well as some soulful electric guitar parts to my pattern picking through Restore Us. This is our third Sunday with the new song. It’s going to be a standard; we have gotten good feedback on it. Check out these lyrics:

Sunday Set List #93 3/6/2011

It was a good week. My evening accounting class on Thursday night was cancelled which meant worship team practice didn’t have to end at eight. That meant we didn’t have to skip the devotional time (read Bible study) we open practice with. We can easily spend over half an hour in the Word together, and Thursday night centering on the Word was just what we all needed. I have been working through the book of Psalms and we covered Psalm 106 (I’ve been at it for a few years!). We have found from practical experience that time in the Word and prayer sets the best tone for practice.

This morning we (Brad and Brian) worked through some technical glitches with the bass; after some frustrating troubleshooting it turned out to be the bass, so we switched Jody to another bass. After that warm-up proved uneventful. It was a nice touch to have Brad on the keyboard this morning to fatten up the sound; it has been awhile.

It was another exceptional service this morning. After last week; it seemed unlikely, but God was at work in our midst. Powerful singing, powerful preaching, and a sweet time in Communion.

This was the best we have done with Praise Him, Alleluia. I told everyone at practice that since we have six verses let’s build the song as we go, but did not give any specific instruction. We did one take and I told everyone to just do the same thing Sunday, and they did. The last verse was sung in triumph to our risen King.

Brad suggested we work on the abrupt ending of Restore Us, so we did. I had Pastor Mark follow the song with a prayer, and he did a great job with it. It really fit well with Communion. We sing a repentance song as the bread is passed, and a Communion song as the cup is passed to provide an appropriate focus. It has worked well for us.

We pulled Brian off the drums and put him on the mandolin for Amazing Grace. I played at capo 7, and Dennis straight up which made for a rich arrangement of a congregational favorite. Believe me I saw a sea of smiles when we began; we wrapped around for an acappela finish with the first verse.

Sunday Set List #92 2/27/2011

We had an exceptional Sunday today! We are so blessed to have a singing congregation; I told them so this morning. The team played and sang great this morning; it was a sweet time of worshipping the Lord together. It was a far cry from Thursday night, we struggled with the songs, it was sounding better in warm-up this morning but it wasn’t inspiring the level of confidence we like. Brian admitted after the service that it looked like we had train wreck coming; it was just the opposite. Something happens when we all sing to the Lord together; it was like that this morning. God is so good!

Restore Us was a new song for us this morning; we will be doing it for the next three weeks. It’s targeted slot is for Communion as a prayer of Repentance or Confession; I used it as a response song this morning. Repentance songs are hard to find, and this is an excellent one. I have had good feedback so far on this one.

Sunday Set List #91 2/19/2011

This morning Pastor Mark asked, “Why do we choose such small lives, investing in trivial and temporal things?” I thought it was a good question to take to heart because it is so easy to waste time on things that just don’t matter.

I’ve heard it said, “You don’t know what you’ve got, until it’s gone.” Brian and Jody were on vacation this week and because Brad was leading that meant no drums. The sound was quite different this morning because the drums figured in heavily in the normal arrangement of some of the songs Brad chose; we made some adjustments. Our congregation is pretty flexible and didn’t miss a beat. We praised the Lord together passionately.

This was our third week in a row with Hero; our standard treatment for new songs. Based on the congregational response; it will be a regular in the rotation. That is good because it is so strong lyrically in a song category that is hard to fill.

I’ve enjoyed the rotation on the bass, but I’m looking forward to leading the next rotation.

It was a good Sunday! It is a blessing to be a part of a singing congregation; I am always encouraged when I hear everyone singing. We are always on the lookout for God in the Spotlight songs. Songs that focus more on who Jesus is and what he has done and less on what we are doing. Chad brought the song Hero to our attention via Teresa. Brad did an outstanding job of creating the arrangement and leading it this morning; the team was remarkably tight for a new song. The congregational response was surprising for a new song; Brian suspected many people already knew it. It may have also reflected their engagement level coming out of Holy is the Lord and Forever. We are blessed to be part of a singing congregation.

We had a Combined Service this morning at the Middle School, so that meant packing up the gear and setting it up this morning. We added some complexity to the normal set up by bringing an electric piano for the choir number with the band. We pulled down some risers from from the stage for the choir. We had some additional set up challenges. We forgot the cables for the direct boxes, but we managed to work around the problem. We couldn’t get the electric drums working through the sound system, fortunately, we also use a separate amp so we were still okay. In spite of all those delays, we got the choir rehearsal and music team rehearsal completed before the service started.

The service went well. In spite of a less that optimal mix for the band, everything sounded just fine for the congregation. Much better than when we have a great mix for the band and I get feedback that it did not sound right in the congregation. Singing went well and the choir did great. Pastor Mark had an excellent sermon on the church. My takeaway:

I cannot grow properly without you.
You cannot grow properly without me.
The local church cannot grow properly without us.

It was a good Sunday together. We had a great time of fellowship with a potluck after the service.

I am always encouraged when I hear the congregation sing; I was really encouraged this morning! I just seemed to feel more passion than normal as we sang to the Lord together this morning. The acapella finish on the last chorus of To God Be the Glory was one of those moments. The congregation is starting to get Not Of Our Hands. The team was musically tight this morning; it was a delight just to be there.

Pastor Mark had a sobering sermon from Psalm 139 on life where he reminded us that “this is our time to make a difference.” He is right.

The worship service went well this morning.

On the music side I was very pleased. With the exception of our tempo was a bit too fast for He Is Yahweh (probably unnoticed by congregation), the team played and sang well especially on our new song. Congregational singing was strong on all the songs except our new one, Not of Our Hands, which is why we will run it the next two Sundays. It’s not actually a new song, but is the result of reviewing a Vineyard Compilation CD that Pastor Mark got me last fall when I was lamenting finding new songs worth singing. I’ve been waiting to do it for months. It’s a great upbeat Holy Spirit song that reminds us it’s not about doing everything in our own strength but empowered instead by the Holy Spirit. It certainly speaks to me, and I’m confident it will grow on the congregation.

This was the first time I led Jesus Messiah; we were slow to get it into the mix. I enjoyed doing it so much on the bass because its lyrics are so strong and its engaging to play, so I decided to learn it on the guitar as well. The congregation has responded well to it.

It was a great Sunday; a hard hitting, thought provoking sermon from Pastor Mark coupled with heartfelt corporate worship in song. I was a Sunday I was thankful to be gathered with the people of God. Last Sunday the pedal in the bass drum broke at the end of the service and the replacement did not come in as expected, so we went without drums this morning. Well almost, Brian decided on the fly to come up during Jesus Messiah and add a drum part with the rest of the set and that worked out just fine.

We had an excellent service this morning, attendance was lighter than normal, but spirits were high. The question I’m pondering this morning from pastor Mark is: Is your default to be pessimistic or thankful?

Brad was his normal upbeat self as he lead. He introduced Always Forgiven this morning, and it’s going to be a good addition to our response songs. Lyrically is is strong and musically it adds some variety to our normal sound:

Christmas Eve

We had a packed house for the Christmas Eve service. The songs and service had gotten pretty static, so we changed it up some this year. We went with a first advent, candle lighting, sermon, second advent theme and ended on an upbeat note. The change of pace was refreshing. Two of my favorite contemporary Christmas songs are What Kind of Throne and Fullness of Grace; both are lyrically rich and reflective with music that connect well.

4th Sunday in Advent

We had a full service today; full of people and full of extras.

We had the children (all dressed in traditional new testament garb) sing several songs this morning. It was a real treat since we haven’t had them sing in years. Derek did a great job of jumping in and organizing everything.

We also prayed for our missionaries Rich and Joyce Mattocks and their daughter Christa before they go back to Papua, New Guinea.

We used our baptismal for the first time after installing it quite awhile ago. Since the baptismal is underneath where the worship team normally stands, it required some rearranging. We moved down to the same level as the congregation and went with three unplugged acoustic guitars and two microphones for vocals. Everything went really well, three guitars were enough to get a workable volume level. It was great to hear all the voices as we sang the classic Christmas carols together.

My remarks leading into baptism:

I haven’t said anything about the spiritual growth process, but I have a few brief remarks now.
The results on the all elective approach to spiritual growth have been in for years and for the vast majority of individualistic American Christians it has been a failure.
I’m going to tell you what I told the elders when we first started working at defining a process for spiritual growth. I am no longer willing to invest my limited time in programs I know don’t work. Doing the same thing and just trying harder isn’t the solution.
I have learned firsthand that:
· No one learns to play tennis just by watching others play.
· No one gets a college degree in mathematics by just watching lectures.
· No one becomes a guitar player by just watching guitar players at rock concerts.
· No one becomes a spiritually mature follower of Jesus just by watching others.
All are achieved by doing the appropriate and requisite work.
The amount of work done has a significant effect on the results or lack thereof.
What does it take to grow spiritually, work and guidance in conjunction with the Holy Spirit. The spiritual growth process we put together will provide the work and guidance.
If you have signed up for the spiritual growth process, please stand up. Thank you for signing up. Speaking on behalf of the elders and Pastor Mark you are a great encouragement to us. We were convicted that our responsibility was to put together a process, let everyone know about it, and trust the Holy Spirit to touch hearts. You may be seated.
Some questions to think about as you sing the next song:
Are you following Jesus? Or is Jesus just one item added to your plate from the American smorgasbord of life?
Is Jesus your King? Or have you declared your independence in kingdom matters as you rule from your personal throne?
Are you playing your God-given and God-gifted role in the body of Christ, his church? Or is church just a place you go to, just like going to the movies?
Are you actually following Jesus? Or are you watching from a distance?

3rd Sunday in Advent

This morning we had our missionaries from Trieste, Italy visiting. Caleb had a hard hitting message from John 15:4-5 and the question I had to ask myself as I listened to the sermon was: "Are you trying to make a name for yourself?” The reminder from Jesus is “apart from me, you can do nothing.”

The congregational worship in song went well. The highlights were an acapella finish where everyone really sang out on the chorus on O Come, All Ye Faithful to close the first set. Open the Eyes of My Heart was also a powerful song this morning. We had to make some adjustments this morning on the team as Jody had an accident at home with some really hot coffee, so Brian filled in on bass and we left the electric guitar spot open. Fortunately Jody was fine and was able to make the service and we didn’t miss a beat on on the music. Here are the songs we did:

2nd Sunday in Advent

It was a good Sunday today. Attendance was excellent, and at MLCC more people means great worship in song together. He Shall Reign based on Isaiah 11, is an advent favorite for us and closed the opening set on a note of triumph. I could tell they knew it well!!!

Pastor Mark had another hard hitting sermon today. The question to think about today: We say Jesus is King, yet why do so many Christians live as though they are kings of their lives?

Our song during Communion, Behold the Lamb, connected nicely with the “around the table of the King” line at the end of each verse. We all love it when the Holy Spirit orchestrates those connections!

It was great to have Jody back on bass which allowed Brian to fill out the sound on the electric guitar. Everyone played and sang well this morning and it was all worth it to worship together with an engaged congregation.

1st Sunday in Advent

We opened with the classic Advent Hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel. We start it low and slow and build as we go with a couple of key changes along the way (not bad for guitar players!). You can check out our arrangement with all the leadsheets below.

All Things New is our new song for the Advent/Christmas season and should be an excellent song for all year round; we will be running it the next two Sundays. We had good response for a new song.

Pastor Mark had another hard hitting discipleship sermon this Sunday. Society tells us to indulge ourselves because we deserve it. Mark’s question to reflect on was: When is the last time you denied yourself? A tough question right after Thanksgiving!

We closed with Celtic Christmas Blessing adding in the mandolin and I capo the guitar at the 7th fret. It’s a become a song many look forward to. We’ll use it as a closer for the next two Sundays also.

Pastor Mark has really been in the zone on his discipleship sermons. One of the questions to ponder today was “When was the last time you risked something that if God did not show up it would fail?” If your like me you design it so it will work whether God shows up or not; not exactly walking by faith and not by sight!

This morning was our 3rd time for Jesus Messiah (we run every new song on three successive Sundays to introduce it). The song is really growing on me, Brad did a great job of arranging it, so it would work for our congregation. From my observation this morning, the congregation has it down. It’s a great addition to those hard to find God in the Spotlight – Jesus songs.

I’m reminded this morning that serving is a gift from God, not something to endure. We finished Acts in the adult Sunday School class I lead; we’ve been at it for over a year. It’s been quite the journey. We will change the pace significantly next week when we start 1 Timothy.

Today was Pastor Mark’s second discipleship sermon and it was just as hard hitting as last week. One of the questions he asked us was “Will I follow Jesus or will I go my own way?” Sometimes I wonder if American Christianity has convinced people they can have Jesus and go their own way; Christianity a la carte!

Brad did a great job leading worship in song, with great verbal connections with the Gideons and Pastor Mark’s message. Great congregational response in song; they have Jesus Messiah down and they did well on How Great is Your Faithfulness which we have only done once as as a congregation and that was over six months ago.

It was a good Sunday to reflect on how serious we are about following Jesus.

This morning “Jesus Messiah” was a new song for us, great lyrics and it went well. Brad worked up a great arrangement for us and I expect it to become a new staple. GITS-Jesus songs are hard to find and this is an excellent one. One of the high points for me this morning was hearing the congregation sing boldly during an acapella pass through the chorus in “Mighty to Save;” I love to hear the people sing; it’s why I learned to play the guitar (Although it was a bass day for me!). The other was Pastor Mark’s hard hitting sermon on “What is a Disciple?”

Sunday Set List #76 10/24/2010

The worship service was packed this morning, more so than normal which always makes for a great time of singing to the Lord. It’s always a privilege to lead the God’s people in song.

On Thursday night Brian suggested we try doing the first set as a medley flowing from one song to another which is not something we normally do, but I was game. We worked out the transitions, and practiced them. This morning the first one was a bit rough but it worked, we hadn’t anticipated the clapping at the end of the song; I had intended to hang on the D and let it pass; Brian had other ideas an started the song, so I joined in and everything worked out just fine. It reinforced to me how important it is to listen to each other.

This was our second Sunday with Before the Throne and I have to admit the song is really growing on me; rich lyrics and a great arrangement means this song will see regular use.

We pulled Brad off the Drums to play the mandolin for Amazing Grace. Ted and Susan had some nice harmonies going at the end as we returned to the first verse for an accapella end. Since we hadn’t done the song for quite some time, we got a great heartfelt congregational response. It made for a strong uplifting finish.

It was a good Sunday. We struggled at a few points in several songs, but most likely not something the congregation noticed. I failed to turn on my acoustic guitar for the first set; since it’s often so light in the monitor mix that I can’t hear the difference if it is on or off and am used to playing through regardless. Fortunately Brian was playing an electric guitar so we had something in the house mix. I was great to have Jody back in on bass, so we could have an electric guitar this morning. Probably the high point for me was Great is Thy Faithfulness; we had the ladies sing verse two, the guys do verse three and everyone do the chorus acapella. The congregation really sang out on that final chorus; it definitely was a moment!

Before the Throne was a new song for us this morning. I created a hybrid arrangement using the Sovereign Grace version and another version off the internet. After I was done with it I had dropped the key from D modulating to E on the last verse to C modulating to D on the last verse. I stripped out extra chords in the first verse to simplify it enough so I could use a flat picking pattern which allowed us to build the instrumentation and intensity on each verse. The song is much easier to sing in the lower key combination(Leadsheet). I anticipate using this updated hymn regularly; the lyrics are rich and the arrangement is a pleasure to play and sing.

Missionary Sunday!!! My take away from Rev Plum Blossom’s sermon: Jesus call “follow me (obey) is the most fundamental and the most difficult. His closing question “How are you doing at following (obeying) Jesus?” It doesn’t get any more fundamental or direct than that?

Worship in song went well today. Brad set the tone and we went with it. As I looked out I could see the heartfelt worshippers and was encouraged. I normally don’t sing when I play bass but just decided I would this morning; it made all the difference for me.

A full house is always encouraging and great for singing. Attendance was up this morning! Jody was on the phone calling those who had been missing Sunday, and they all showed up.

Pastor Mark brought a challenging message from an unlikely passage. He posed the question “Have you ever wanted something so be you can taste it?” I can identify with that comment. He talked about forfeiting the future, like Esau did, for the immediate. Certainly food for thought in an instant America.

Worship in song went well this morning. Overall, the team played and sang well and congregational participation was good. Though I have to admit my bass playing was off my norm this morning, for some reason I was struggling on songs I know pretty well. In spite of those problems, I personally experienced some special moments with the Lord in worship as we sang.

Sunday Set List #71 9/19/2010

We had a change of pace on the music side this morning, an acoustic set with an acoustic guitar and an acoustic bass (El Capitan). It gave me a chance to string several songs together (Wonderful Maker and Revelation Song, O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus and I Feel the Winds of God Today) which is something we don’t do when we have the drums. The team played and sang well today and we had our normal outstanding congregation engagement. We are spoiled; praise the Lord!!!

Mark’s outstanding sermon on grief left us in a reflective mood. As he so aptly stated “grief is the price we pay for love.”

When we went up for the second set of songs; Brad was pointing to O the Deep, Deep leadsheet suggesting a change of order, and I shook my head. I opted to stick with the plan, but I slowed the tempo Holy Spirit of Glory down some from the peppier pace we were playing at in practice so it wouldn’t drag, but this morning the slower tempo was just what was needed. Sunday Set List #70 9/12/2010

This morning had the makings of a challenge when Brad (drums) called and explained the tag team arrangement that was required this morning for him to cover the service and Dawn, Sunday School. A sick child and ministry commitments make life interesting. Warmup on the team went fine without Brad at the drums and the service and even better during the service; Brad didn’t miss a beat. The rest of the team was on the mark too. We tried a new team arrangement this week with the vocals having one monitor and mix and the band and me having two monitors and the other mix. This is a change from the vocalists sharing the worship team leaders mix in their monitor and the bass and drummer sharing a separate mix. The goal of the new mix is to try to tighten up the vocals and I think we are making some progress.

We had our normal outstanding congregational response in song. Mark had another hard hitting sermon from his favorite passage the in the Old Testament. He reminded us that “God honors genuine faith.”

We had an excellent worship service today. The congregation was engaged as we praised the Lord together. The worship team played and sang well. Brad played bass for the first time in a long time, other than than a normal team. I Feel the Winds of God Today was a new song for the congregation. Brian and I used to play it regularly years ago when we first started playing together. A Streams in the Desert devotional brought the song to mind and after reviewing it, I decided it would be a good new song for us.It is in the Closer-Serve/Obey category which is a hard category for us to find songs in. Today was our worship service/baptism at the lake and picnic at Waterfront Park. We had near perfect weather, sunny and comfortable. It was a great time to get outside and be visible in our community singing God’s praises and proclaiming Jesus Christ to any who happened by. Public baptisms are a powerful testimony of Jesus moving in our midst and committing to follow him.

It takes a team effort to pack up everything, set it up, and make it all work. Everyone chipped in and we finished with time to spare. The mix was great and no doubt helped greatly by the snake we just got (Kudos to Aaron for getting us a great deal from Carvin!!!).

It was great to hang out with everyone instead of rushing out of the service when we’re done.
